Matthieu Mantovani is an experienced and constantly groundbreaking director with a remarkable ability to immerse himself in cinematic worlds, both real and generative.
Matthieu began his career as an assistant to the photographer Paolo Roversi. After a spell as part of avant-garde directorial collective Zoo, Matthieu embarked on his solo directing career, quickly accumulating acclaimed work for brands such as Mercedes, Vodafone, EDF and Toyota.
Approachable and committed, Matthieu’s style is defined by perceptive casting and masterful storytelling, weaving the threads of narrative, humour, and emotion with a deep understanding of visual effects.
An artist with seemingly boundless imagination, Matthieu has become increasingly drawn to the limitless canvas and raw potential of generative AI. Under the alias Beyond Human, Matthieu pushes visual boundaries and brings his bold, original and often startling concepts to life through AI. Initially an experimental endeavour, this work has evolved into a structured commercial and artistic practice, catching the attention of contemporary art galleries and leading to his founding of Année Zéro, a Parisian gallery dedicated to pioneering artists working with AI. Through its exhibitions, Année Zéro seeks to encourage critical reflection on the role of AI in our society.
Matthieu’s eloquent frankness about the potential, limitations and persil of AI is fascinating to listen to – if you don’t already find generative AI both intriguing and terrifying, he says, perhaps it’s time you started to.
In early 2025 Matthieu was selected to feature at the AI Action Summit with his work T.R.U.M.P— Truth Redirected Using Manipulated Pictures, a machine that automatically generates hyper-realistic fake photojournalism using real-time news reports. T.R.U.M.P addresses the complex issue of information manipulation and the end of image truth.
Matthieu continues to expertly direct both live-action and AI filmic content internationally, while actively developing feature film projects in France, fuelled by an enduring passion for cinema. He’s not actually made of Spaghetti, though he does value his part-Italian heritage.
