A Londoner of mixed British and Indian descent, Matt Houghton is a prolific, award-winning filmmaker who crafts intimate human stories. His films often tread the line between fact and fiction, and he has an eye for the beautiful in the everyday.

Matt spent his early twenties working as a cinema usher, where he watched and rewatched films obsessively. From little acorns spring mighty oaks, and Matt is now a self-taught filmmaker and photographer, and a multi-award-winning documentarian.

His highly acclaimed short film Landline won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Short, while Dear Araucaria made with The Guardian, won the Audience Award at Sheffield Doc/Fest. Continuing his streak of acclaimed shorts, Earth to Cop is an eyewitness portrait of climate change and played at the COP26 opening ceremony in front of 140 world leaders before being picked as one of Vimeo’s Best of The Year. Matt’s latest short, co-directed with the film’s protagonist, Georgie Wileman, is an intimate, self-documented portrait of living with endometriosis. This Is Endometriosis had its world premiere at HotDocs before screening at Everyman Cinemas across the UK.

Matt is a founding member of Fee Fie Foe as well as a prolific documentary producer, including on the Netflix Original feature Apollo Thirteen: Survival. Matt has recently wrapped production on his debut feature, With A Gun and A Radio.

Alongside his documentary work, he has worked in commercials for over a decade, on projects for a broad range of brands, including Google, Volkswagen, Strongbow, Toyota, Smart Car, Axe, Red Bull, Camelot, Nikon and Save The Children.
